Arsenal now lead race to sign ‘world class’ Star before deadline day

Arsenal want Marco Asensio and are understood to be at the front of the queue for his signature ahead of the transfer deadline on Thursday.

The Gunners have allowed winger Nicolas Pepe to leave the club on loan, returning to France with a move to join Nice.

That means Arsenal may well be in the market for another left-footed winger before the transfer deadline, to replace Pepe and offer competition for Bukayo Saka.

Wolverhampton Wanderers star Pedro Neto is the main name in the frame, but Arsenal could look to raid Real Madrid again after Martin Odegaard’s success.

The Mirror report that Arsenal are now ‘in the box seat’ to land Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, leading Manchester United in the race for his signature.

It’s stated that Real want to have Asensio’s future sorted quickly and expect an answer from him on his future within days.

What’s interesting is that Asensio has joined Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, just as Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for another Mendes client in Neto.

There is now a real push for Asensio to make a move to the Premier League, so Mendes may well have pitched Asensio to Arsenal as an alternative to Neto.

It’s claimed that Tottenham Hotspur did fancy signing Asensio earlier this summer but they have now cooled their interest and aren’t expected to make a move.

United’s interest is in case they can’t sign Ajax winger Antony, so Arsenal appear to be the favourites.

Asensio, 26, was tipped to become a superstar and was even hailed as ‘world class’ by Vicente del Bosque.

Yet whilst Asensio hit 12 goals in 42 games last season, the Spain international hasn’t quite lived up to his early billing.

Asensio is out of contract next season and the coming days may be Real’s last chance to sell the wide man before he chooses to leave in 2023.

That means Arsenal may well sense a bargain with Asensio, who could be cheaper than Neto given that contract situation.

This could be a late opportunity for Arsenal, but convincing a notable player like Asensio to come in as backup to or competition for Saka may be difficult.
