Alan Smith has stated that it would be a ‘coup for Arsenal’ if Mikel Arteta manages to secure the transfer of Leicester City midfielder, Youri Tielemans on deadline day, as he told Sky Sports News (31/08/22 at 4:15 pm).
The Arsenal legend added that Tielemans is a ‘quality’ player and he felt that his former side would have already signed the midfielder this summer.
Tielemans is a sought-after player in the transfer market, but perhaps the reason behind him still being at the King Power Stadium is down to the fact that he has one-year left on his contract.
The 25-year-old has signaled his intentions for a long time that his future lies elsewhere, other than Leicester, because that new contract would have been signed by now.
Arsenal are in need of another number eight before Thursday’s cut-off point, could they finally land Tielemans’ talents?
Well, former Arsenal and Leicester striker Smith thinks it’s a possibility, as he shared what he likes about it.
“I think they have been interested in Tielemans for a long, long time,” said Smith. “I was actually thinking at the start of the window that the deal would be done fairly quickly”.
“Maybe it’s just down to the money, like it quite often is. Arsenal are short in that area. Thomas Partey has got himself injured. His injury record hasn’t been great. Elneny has picked up a knock. They are short.
“He is a quality player Tielemans, no doubt about that. It was flat for him last season at Leicester, maybe he had an eye on elsewhere.
“We have seen over the last few seasons what he can do. He isn’t somebody who you would describe as being a holding midfielder. He has great energy, and vision, knows where the goal is and it would be a coup for Arsenal to bring him in at the club”.
Given the size of Arsenal, and their history, then they have always had that pull when trying to lure the top talents to the Emirates Stadium.
Well, with Arteta’s side sitting top of the Premier League table with five wins out of five, then surely it makes them even more appealing now.
It will be interesting to see who is able to land Tielemans’ talents on deadline day because it’s worth knocking on Leicester’s doors, and putting in a cheeky offer for the player.
The reason is that the Foxes know they are set to lose the Belgium international for nothing next summer if they don’t accept an offer now.
