The Red Devils have brought in five players so far this summer – Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony – with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka expected to complete a loan move on deadline day.
Although the Red Devils have managed to lure half-a-dozen players to Old Trafford, they did miss out on a number of targets – including Jurrien Timber, Darwin Nunez, Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot. Their failure to land De Jong was a particularly frustrating blow due to the Barcelona star being Ten Hag’s primary midfield target.
As the summer window ticks into its last day, United fans aren’t expecting any major developments. But could there be just one last twist? Ten Hag certainly isn’t ruling that out.
When asked about United’s deadline day plans on Wednesday, Ten Hag said: “Will that [Antony’s deal] be the end of the signings? I think so, for this window, it will be the end. But when there is great opportunity, you have to be always alert as a top club.”
United have proven to be alert in previous summers. This time last year, they swooped for Cristiano Ronaldo when Juventus made him available in the last few days of the window. Rivals Manchester City were also in for his signature, but United won the battle.
In terms of who United could sign, there is one name that’s being thrown around – Sergino Dest. Ten Hag worked with the Barcelona right-back, 21, during their time together at Ajax, with Dest playing 35 games in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United have held exploratory talks with Barcelona over signing Dest on a season-long loan. The USA international, who has three years left on his deal, has not played a single minute of La Liga football this term.
It’s claimed United view Dest as an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is behind Diogo Dalot in the pecking order at Old Trafford. Dest is stronger than the Englishman in attacking positions, providing three assists in 21 La Liga games last season.
In comparison, Wan-Bissaka, 24, failed to register an assist from his 20 Premier League appearances last term. The former Crystal Palace defender, who cost United £50million, has recorded just two goals and 11 assists during his 132-game Premier League career.
