Manchester United have announced the arrival of Martin Dúbravka from Newcastle United on a season-long loan.
The fee is said to be £2 million for the initial loan move.
They have an obligation to buy for £6m if he starts a certain number of Premier League games.
The Magpies have a recall option they can use in January if they need his services.
Erik ten Hag wanted to sign a cover for David de Gea after Dean Henderson moved to Nottingham Forest on loan.
36-year-old Tom Heaton is the only other first-team shot-stopper at Ten Hag’s disposal.
The Slovakia international is delighted to join the Red Devils. He told ManUtd.com, “To be joining Manchester United is a special moment in my career and I can’t wait to get started and help the group achieve its ambitions.”
“I am joining an excellent group of goalkeepers with lots of experience in the Premier League, and I know that we will push and support each other to keep our standards at the highest levels.”
“The chance to work with David De Gea, alongside Tom Heaton, is one that I am relishing.”
Martin Dubravka will be a decent second-choice goalkeeper
It is very clear that the spot between the sticks belongs to David De Gea.
The Spaniard was arguably United’s best player last season.
Even though he started this campaign poorly, one can expect him to retain his spot.
Dubravka brings vast Premier League experience with him.
He has made 130 appearances in four years for the north-east outfit after joining them from Sparta Prague in 2018.
The 33-year-old was Newcastle’s number-one shot-stopper but Nick Pope’s arrival from Burnley forced him down the pecking order.
A non-mandatory buy clause helps us to see this deal positively as Dubravka is not a long-term solution.
He is at the twilight of his career and United would not want to look at him as a permanent replacement.
Ten Hag might opt to play him only when the Spaniard is injured or rested for a cup game.
Dubravka is likely to be United’s final signing of this window following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony.
