Gabriel Jesus is the new Brazilian at Arsenal who has been making all the noise recently, but it was young Marquinhos who stole the show yesterday.
Mikel Arteta’s side kicked off their Europa League campaign in Switzerland against FC Zurich. The Gunners boss handed Marquinhos his senior debut, and the young Brazilian impressed everybody.
Gabriel Jesus impressed by Marquinhos’ debut performance
Marquinhos started on the right wing in place of Bukayo Saka yesterday.
The young Brazilian joined Arsenal from Sao Paulo in the summer in a £3 million deal (Goal). He was expected by many to go out on loan or feature only for the youth team, but after some impressive displays for the U21s, Arteta decided he was ready to play for the senior side.
Marquinhos only took 16 minutes to open the scoring against FC Zurich yesterday. He smashed home Eddie Nketiah’s cross with his weaker right foot, and he was overwhelmed with emotions straight after.
The teenager kept things simple throughout the game and really caught our eye. To make his debut even more special, he delivered a fantastic cross for Nketiah’s goal in the second half, and that won Arsenal the game.
Everyone was impressed by Marquinhos last night – including Gabriel Jesus, who hailed his young compatriot on Instagram.
‘What a player,’ Jesus commented on Marquinhos’ post, while Nketiah wrote: “Yes bro!”
Arsenal may have found another gem in Marquinhos.
Edu Gaspar’s presence as the Gunners’ technical director has helped them sign a number of talented players from Brazil in recent years.
Gabriel Magalhaes and Jesus are the big names, while the other Gabriel – Martinelli – came to Arsenal as a nobody and has become a superstar today.
Marquinhos is the latest Brazilian to catch the eye at Arsenal, and he could well follow Martinelli’s footsteps to become one of the Gunners’ best players in the very near future.
