Arsenal summer signing made his full Arsenal debut this week against FC Zurich in the Europa League, and his display seems to have impressed Gabriel Martinelli.
The Gunners signed the Portuguese midfielder for £34 million this summer (Sky Sports). He came in with an injury that delayed his debut, but after an impressive cameo against Manchester United last weekend, Mikel Arteta gave him his first start as an Arsenal player in the Europa League on Thursday.
Gabriel Martinelli impressed by Arsenal star Fabio Vieira vs FC Zurich
Arsenal kicked off their Europa League campaign with a hard-fought victory over Zurich in Switzerland. Goals from Marquinhos and Eddie Nketiah gave them the win, but Vieira showed flashes of brilliance as well.
The midfielder started in the number 10 position instead of club captain Martin Odegaard. He found it difficult to break down a Zurich side that sat back and defended deep, but his skill on the ball was evident for everyone to see.
For Arsenal’s opener in the 16th minute, Vieira released Nketiah with a superb pass. The Englishman then assisted Marquinhos, who took his chance wonderfully.
In his 69 minutes on the pitch, Vieira had 45 touches of the ball and completed 31 of his 34 attempted passes, maintaining a very impressive 91 per cent passing accuracy. He created two chances as well, which is not a bad return at all for a 22-year-old on his full debut. (Stats from SofaScore)
Vieira posted a picture of himself on Instagram yesterday, with the caption: “We started our journey in the Europa League in the best way. Good victory. Let’s go gunners!”
An impressed Martinelli replied: “You are the man brother!”
Vieira wasn’t incredible on his full debut on Thursday, but he definitely showed why Arteta and Edu were so keen to sign him this summer.
The Portuguese midfielder started in his natural number 10 position against Zurich, but he can play in a whole host of positions. At Porto, he featured on both flanks, as a box-to-box midfielder and also a number nine.
Vieira’s versatility is one of his biggest assets, and he will give Arteta plenty of options in the coming games.
Arsenal take on PSV Eindhoven next, and Vieira is expected to keep his place in the side.
