Arsenal are reportedly already plotting on recalling 20-year-old centre-back Omar Rekik, with the defender hardly featuring for Sparta Rotterdam this season since joining the Eredivise club on loan this summer.
According to Football London, the Gunners are frustrated with the lack of football Rekik has played for Sparta since signing for the Dutch side on loan for the year, with the Tunisian international playing just 12 minutes across all competitions and featuring in just one game, that coming in the first game of the season against SC Heerenveen.
With the likes of Nuno Tavares and Folarin Balogun flourishing out on loan, Rekik’s spell in Holland could not be going anymore worse, and now it seems like Arsenal could be taking steps to recall the defender in January to ship him out to another club in the winter window.
Rekik signed for Arsenal from Hertha Berlin as an 18-year-old and has since made quite the progress in north London, with the defensive wonderkid now a full international with Tunisia and a potential candidate to travel with the African side to the 2022 FIFA World Cup this winter in Qatar.
However, Rekik’s World Cup chances are hanging by a thread given how little the defender has actually played this season, and for Arsenal, recalling the centre-back in January after missing out on the biggest competition in football could be a case of the damage already being done to the defender.
Indeed, Rekik is a talented defender who could be a regular in the Eredivise if given the chance by Sparta, yet with Arsenal seemingly open to recalling the centre-back already, there’s a good chance that Mikel Arteta will bring the defender back to north London like he has done to the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Miguel Azeez.
Rekik is one of the numerous young players on Arsenal’s books who could have the potential to become a regular for the north London side in the years to come, and a good loan spell out in Europe will be ideal to get the Tunisian’s career off the ground, yet that clearly is not happening at Sparta this season.
The centre-back has played just one game for the Rotterdam side this campaign, and if Arsenal are to get the best out of his potential, the club need to be finding a team that are willing to play the 20-year-old on a consistent basis where Rekik can develop his game and get vital minutes playing senior football.
