Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he rewatched the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford and realised that his side can only blame themselves for the defeat.
The Gunners won each of their first five games of the season. They were undoubtedly the best team in the country in August, but they slipped up when they faced Erik Ten Hag’s men at the start of this month.
Mikel Arteta says Arsenal deserved to beat Manchester United
Arsenal went into the game at Old Trafford in fantastic form. Many people expected the Gunners to get something away from the fixture, but sadly for them, they couldn’t.
However, Arsenal shouldn’t be too upset about the result. They dominated Manchester United for large parts of the game and were really unlucky to not score more than one goal.
The biggest negative, however, was the way they conceded the two goals in the second half.
Arteta revealed yesterday that he rewatched the whole game against United and told his players that they deserved to win the game. However, he admitted that he realised it was completely their fault that they came away with nothing.
He told Sky Sports: “After Manchester United, it was very simple.
“I watched the game back and said to the boys: ‘We have deserved to win the game with the way we played – but we gave them two opportunities to do something they are exceptionally good at’.
“That was our fault – and then you have to move on.
“This is the game at the end of the day – it’s decided in various small fractions of time, moments and details that lead to a football result. It can be completely different to what you have earned and our job is to earn the right to win the match. Sometimes it’s margins, errors or decisions that are not in your hands.”
Arsenal were really unlucky to not come away with at least a point from the game at Old Trafford, but when you make mistakes like they did at those stages of the game, there’s no coming back.
Arteta’s players will have learnt a lot from that game. They are still a very young side and deserve a lot of credit for the performance they put in for large parts of the game against United earlier this month.
Arsenal have to put that game behind them now. A lot of the season is still left to be played, and despite the defeat at Old Trafford, they are still at the top of the league table.
The Gunners take on Brentford tomorrow and Arteta would love nothing more than a win.
