Kevin Campbell has questioned the omission of Arsenal defender Ben White from the latest England squad.
White is a central defender by trade but has been playing at right-back this season as the Gunners have stormed to the top of the Premier League.
William Saliba has come back from loan and slotted in at the heart of the defence alongside Gabriel, meaning White has had to adjust.
But Campbell told TalkSPORT Gareth Southgate should have taken a look at White, suggesting that the likes of Harry Maguire should have been left out.
Campbell on Ben White
When asked if White had shown enough this season to be involved in the England squad, Campbell said: “I think he has.
“He’s played out of position for Arsenal this season and been outstanding at right-back. You know what he can do at centre-back – and right-back now.
“When you’re top of the league, and you’re doing well and you don’t get in the England squad, then you’re going to question.
“There’s players there who are not playing for their clubs who have got in because of tournament football under this manager.
“If they’re not playing for their clubs and you know what they can do, why are you picking them? He’s somebody you can look at and get him some gametime.”
Perhaps the fact that White has played at right-back this season is the reason he has been left out of the England squad this time.
But the fact remains that anyone who has not been included in this final squad before the World Cup is up against it in terms of going to Qatar.
That said, White knows as well as anyone how quickly things can change as he was called into the Euro 2020 squad late after Trent Alexander-Arnold dropped out.
