‘Is he getting booed’: Carragher apologises to fans of £25m star ‘Arsenal tried to sign’

It’s probably not happened many times before on a football pitch, but when Arsenal’s transfer target, Douglas Luiz, was lining up to take a corner for Aston Villa on Friday night, he was being urged to ‘shoooot’ from the expectant home crowd.

As Arsenal fans will know too well, Luiz now has a reputation for causing some serious, serious problems from corners, including scoring in back-to-back games, directly from a corner.

Well, on Friday night, during Aston Villa’s narrow 1-0 win over Southampton, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was reacting to the ‘top-quality’ midfielder working his magic, as he told Sky Sports.

Luiz didn’t start the game in the Midlands, but an unfortunate injury to Boubacar Kamara just before half-time meant that their popular Brazilian was brought into the action.

And, within minutes, he was lining up to take a corner, with his first causing Southampton keeper, Gavin Bazunu, all sorts of issues before he could parry the danger away.

As Luiz was lining up the second corner, the Villa Park crowd were once again urging him to ‘shooot’, which Carragher, on commentary, mis-interpreted as booing, but when he was corrected, he was quick to apologise.

“He’s a top-quality replacement (Luiz being a first-half sub for Kamara against Southampton),” said Carragher. “You are talking about a player who Arsenal tried to sign before the deadline. There won’t be too much of a drop-off. They are two different types of players, but Luiz is more of a footballer.

On Luiz’s first corner: “It’s the exact same tactic Philippe Coutinho was trying to do. But Luiz just finds that area where there are a lot of Villa players about. And the goalkeeper does well to keep it out of the danger area.

As Luiz went for his second corner: “Is he getting booed there, Douglas Luiz?” asked Carragher.

When the former defender was told by commentator Seb Hutchinson that ‘they were urging him to shoot’, he responded by saying: “Oh, shoot?! Oh, they are asking for goals. Apologies Villans.”

Well, on transfer deadline day, Villa turned down several offers from Arsenal for Luiz’s services and it’s a call that came from the very top at Aston Villa.

For the Midlands side, money isn’t an issue because they have two billionaire owners and the club is in a healthy situation, in terms of its finances.

But Luiz has less than 12 months left on his contract, so the £25 million star can speak to a foreign club in January and sign a pre-contract agreement, or conclude a deal with an English side next summer.

Either way, whilst Villa fans are hopeful of their best midfielder signing on the dotted line, at this moment in time, it looks like he will be heading for the exit door.
