‘Another level’: Paul Merson claims Arsenal 23-year-old is better than Bruno Fernandes

Paul Merson thinks The Norway star has taken Arsenal to ‘another level’ and he is the fifth best midfielder in the Premier League today, as he told Sportskeeda.

The former Arsenal double winner added that he also feels that Odegaard is better than the likes of Manchester United’s marmite-like figure, Bruno Fernandes, Chelsea academy product, Mason Mount and Manchester City’s ‘unreal’ young star, Phil Foden.

These are players the outspoken pundit omitted from his top five list by adding that Odegaard is a player who has ‘already made a massive impact this season’.

Mikel Arteta’s side are sitting top of the Premier League table, with their captain in his usual number 10 role, playing a big part in their strong start.

Martin Odegaard has three Premier League goals to his name and he is seen as the player who makes everything tick for the Gunners in the middle of the park.

Nonetheless, Merson was full of praise for Odegaard, as he named the player in his top five current Premier League midfielders.

“At the moment, I’ll put Martin Odegaard at #5 because he’s taken Arsenal to another level this season,” said Merson. “He’s got a swagger about the way he plays and moves, while he’s also added goals to his game.

“Odegaard has been around for a while, so it’s easy to forget he’s only 23. The fact that he’s Arsenal’s captain at such a young age shows how highly Mikel Arteta rates him. I like Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and the likes, but Odegaard is someone who has already made a massive impact this season.

“He plays in a position where he has to make things happen and he’s done just that as Arsenal find themselves at the top of the Premier League table with 18 points from seven games.

“Foden is an unreal talent too, but if he doesn’t play for Manchester City, they’ve got the likes of Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez to deputize for him.”

Someone might look at Odegaard’s numbers and say ‘well, he has zero assists this season, so he’s not that special’, well he is.

The one-time wonderkid is at the heart of everything good Arteta and his players do, he has an incredible ability to make the ball talk in tight areas and his ability to move the ball with speed makes him devastatingly dangerous.

There’s no doubt that he deserves more respect and he is worthy of being in the top five list of best midfielders in the Premier League today.

The key thing now is that can he help his side, with the captain’s armband on, to the Champions League this season because it’s what the fans crave the most.
