Arsenal want Majer with the Gunners scouting the Rennes midfielder in action for Croatia against Denmark on Thursday night.
Technical director Edu has moved past the murmurings of discontent around his job back in 2020 and has overseen two very positive summer windows.
If there was one disappointment for the Brazilian though, it would have been the lack of a midfield addition before the transfer deadline.
Despite pushing for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, Arsenal left deadline day empty-handed and lacking the quality depth Mikel Arteta really longed to see.
The task for 2023 is clear; find that extra midfielder – whether it’s Douglas Luiz or somebody else…
ARSENAL WANT LOVRO MAJER
The newest name churned out by the ever-unrelenting rumour mill is Rennes star Majer.
The Mirror report that Arsenal have been tracking Majer and even scouted him in action for Croatia against Denmark on Thursday night.
Whoever Arsenal sent to that game in Zagreb will have held mixed feelings.
On the one hand, Majer didn’t even start the game and only played 12 minutes in Croatia’s 2-1 win.
On the other, Majer came off the bench to score the winning goal just seconds after his introduction; talk about an instant impact.
Majer, 24, joined Rennes from Dinamo Zagreb in 2021, bringing the much-publicised Luka Modric comparison with him to France.
Majer was outstanding last season, smashing 11 goals and 13 in 49 games across games for Rennes and Dinamo.
A technically-gifted midfielder who would evoke memories of Cesc Fabregas or Santi Cazorla, Majer does feel like a classic Arsenal midfielder.
Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Juanma Lopez, Majer has been earning plaudits on a regular basis ever since joining Rennes and Arsenal have joined the list of admirers – even with a huge £44million price tag.
Majer is a completely different profile to Douglas Luiz but if Arsenal want something closer to beauty than brawn, the Croatian maestro could be Edu’s latest gem.
